Lets Learn About Fire Extinguishers & Types

Hey, well before we get into going over the basics of using a Fire Extinguisher lets go over the simple fact the best thing to do during a fire is to GET OUT and STAY OUT and then Call 911 immediately. Although Fire Extinguishers are a great thing to have they often can cause a false sense of security and cause more problems in the end if not used properly. Once again the best thing to do is GET OUT and STAY OUT and CALL 911. Now that we have covered that base lets learn about Fire Extinguishers.

Usage of a Fire Extinguisher

The way we teach the public and our own members is to remember the simple acronym “PASS.” Each letter in the word stands for a separate step in how to properly use a fire extinguisher.

  • P – Pull the safety pin usually located around the handle of the extinguisher.
  • A – Aim the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire.
  • S – Squeeze the handle to begin to discharge the extinguisher.
  • S – Sweep the extinguisher side to side while aiming at the base of the fire until the fire is out.

When using a fire extinguisher always keep your eyes on what is burning and keep the exit towards your back. In the event you cannot extinguish the fire you can simply walk backwards and out the exit. We also recommend having at-least 2 Fire Extinguishers ready for use in the event your Fire Extinguisher Runs out. Once again we cannot stress this enough but the

Types of Extinguishers

There is many types of Fire Extinguishers out there which you can run into on a normal basis. We are going to quickly talk about each type and how to identify what materials it can or cannot be used on. To the right of this text is a quick picture which goes over the symbols and the classes of fire that Extinguishers are made for now a days.

Most household extinguishers are a ABC type combination but always check and make sure you are using the right type for the fire. If you also notice now modern extinguishers have a picture of what type of things they can be used on but if you are not sure if it is the right type do not attempt anything and follow our saying from before of GET OUT and STAY OUT and then Call 911 immediately.
